The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) was introduced by the UGC in accordance with the MoE in the year 2022. However, it was not a completely new idea. Earlier, a similar entrance exam (CUCET - Central Universities Common Entrance Test) was conducted, but only 13 central universities participated in it. In 2022, with the introduction of CUET, the entire landscape of UG admissions in India completely changed.

The ideology behind the implementation of CUET was aimed at reducing the pressure of higher cut-offs (12th Board result-based) in most of the renowned central and other universities. The National Education Policy (NEP), which aims to bring radical changes to the education setup in the country, paved the way for the Common University Entrance Test. This will not only release the pressure of high cut-offs and disparity in the marking schemes of various Boards but will also provide an equal and common opportunity for all aspirants to get a seat in any of the top universities participating in CUET 2024.
